You are the newcomer to the team. How do you feel before this new adventure?
I always followed the Dakar Rally on TV as a kid, and now I get the chance to be part of the adventure! It’s a great professional experience that will last forever. I’m hoping to do a great job in providing our company’s Quality of Life Services, not only for our clients, but also for my fellow workers. That’s the secret to the event’s success – teamwork!
How did you prepare for this Dakar Rally?
I’ve been going through the daily menus and checking the translations [the team’s shared language is English]. On the physical side, I’ve recently changed my eating habits, in order to be in the best shape possible. Mental preparation is the most important, knowing that you’re going to work long hours, in heat in the day, and in cold at night. And that sleeping a full night might not be possible when travelling from one location to the next. But that’s part of the game: it’s like they say: if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen!
What impressed you most about this intense preparation?
I always liked remote site events where you go from nothing to a complete setup, providing catering to a large group. Since I found out that Sodexo Chile had catering trucks with complete kitchen setups, I was curious to see them and work in them. The difficult logistics, setups, and tight deadlines impressed me most. You can’t forget anything because you can’t run to the nearest grocery store for what you need. You have to have it all with you. There lies the great challenge: imagining the daily operations in advance and making sure that everything will be there when the team needs it. Luckily, I have now had two of these experiences with the Brazilian Open Tennis Championship at Costa de Sauipe in Salvador-Brazil.
How is Sodexo Brazil engaged with this operation?
Sodexo Brazil is totally engaged with this initiative since we believe it’s a great opportunity to support one of the most famous international events around. I’m hoping to learn with this one, and see what other Brazilian managers will participate with me next year. It’s great for the image of Sodexo Brazil too.
